"Got your back."
As performers at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City, this three-word statement is shared with us even when we are just students at the theater. It’s a way to let fellow teammates and at times, perfect strangers, know that when we take the stage together, we will support them, protect them, honor them, laugh with them, see a different viewpoint in order to encourage them; have their backs in any situation. Because we trust they will do the same for us.
In this very confusing, very trying time in our current society, a lot of us who are members and/or allies of a minority group, experience difference, or are identifiably other — have with the unexpected results of the 2016 election and subsequent rise of violence and hate speech, become justifiably angry, afraid, hopeless. Expecting that the ugliness we find now had died-out or at least become so abhorrent in public as to be its own check.
Even though this retrograde civil violence has emerged, there is power in visibility. There is community to be had. There are backs to be held.
Please get someone’s back and show your support.
This campaign was created by friends David Craig and Mariola Figueroa who both have each other's back. They also both have very strong arms and would be happy and honored to provide a helping hand to anyone who needs it.
